If you took a look simply at the boxing matchup that will air on Fox on Saturday, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Shawn Porter vs. Yordenis Ugas fight is yet another mismatch on primetime TV. Porter, after all, is an established welterweight star, who’s defending his title for the first time since beating another elite opponent in Danny Garcia. Ugas, meanwhile, isn’t nearly as well known, and hasn’t won against an opponent that’s even close to Porter’s level.
But consider the betting odds. In the other two recent mismatches (on paper, at least) on Fox, Keith Thurman was an enormous -10000 favorite vs. Josesito Lopez and Leo Santa Cruz matched those odds and was -10000 vs. Rafael Rivera. Porter isn’t seen as nearly as sure of a thing in the eyes of the oddsmakers.
As of Friday, Porter was a -335 favorite, meaning you’d have to bet $335 to win $100. A few weeks ago, Porter was a -400 favorite. That means more of the money has been coming in on Ugas to pull off the upset. But can he? There are plenty of reasons to watch Porter vs. Ugas. Here are three of them.
1) Porter knows Ugas can be dangerous: Porter (29-2, 17 KOs) is under no illusion that his matchup vs. Ugas will be an easy victory. Ugas doesn’t have any elite victories. But he has a handful of good wins, and Porter isn’t planning to take him for granted. “Every fight is a must win fight and for anyone that doesn’t realize that, it starts when you turn professional,” Porter said. “You do the best you can to put yourself in line to win every fight, to climb the ladder and get to the point where I’m at right now. I didn’t do all that and look at all those fights like they were must win fights and then get here now and look at this fight like it’s any different. This fight is just like my very first fight. It’s just like my second, my third and my last fight. This is a must win fight and it’s definitely a dangerous fight, but they are always going to be dangerous when you get in the ring with the high level caliber fighters that I fight.”
2) Ugas has pulled off upsets before: After losing back-to-back fights to undefeated prospects in 2014, Ugas (23-3, 11 KOs) took the next 27 months off. Then, he beat the undefeated Jamal James and the undefeated Bryant Perrella. Since then, he’s reeled off six-straight victories, including a nice win vs. Thomas Dulorme. Porter is much better than any of those opponents. But Ugas has career momentum and plenty of confidence. “I am an aggressive fighter and I’m going utilize that style on Saturday. Shawn is a little bit more difficult when he moves around in the ring. His boxing ability is underrated. But I’m prepared to do what I have to so that I can become champion.” Ugas also said, “I am 100 percent better technically than Shawn Porter.”
