The Six Nations – now widely revered as perhaps the greatest rugby tournament in either hemisphere – returns in all its bruising glory this weekend.

After Wales’s extraordinary comeback win in France and Italy’s visit to Scotland, a titanic clash between defending champions Ireland and England at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium is the main event this afternoon.

Having claimed their third Grand Slam title courtesy of a hugely satisfying 24-15 victory at Twickenham on the final weekend in 2018, the hosts head into this year’s tournament hoping to justify their billing as clear favourites and as New Zealand’s closest global rivals ahead of the looming World Cup.

England, meanwhile, will hope to improve significantly on their woeful fifth-place finish last time out and rediscover the sort of form that saw them win 22 of their first 23 Tests under Eddie Jones.

David Flatman: I hope I’m wrong and it’s England, but it has to be between Ireland and Wales unfortunately.

Ireland will beat England but if Wales get off to a good start on Friday night, then I think even Ireland might find beating them in Cardiff too much.

So I’m going to say Ireland without a Slam. But my opinion on this changes like the wind, so who knows!

Tim Visser: Ireland. And, yes, with a Slam. They have been the best Northern Hemisphere team for a couple of years. They’ve won titles and have also beaten New Zealand. No one else can say that.

Tom Shanklin: Questions like this are so hard. Five of the teams have proper star quality. Wales. That’s my heart speaking. And my head.

They’ve gone under the radar and the pressure is really on Ireland. Wales are ticking along nicely, and it’s Warren Gatland’s last Six Nations. I have a good feeling, so I’ll say Wales with a Slam!
